BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences

Introduction

Rationale for and/or Distinctive features of the programme

The purpose of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science top-up degree programme is to offer a structured yet flexible and coherent programme of study to students seeking careers in the health and bioscience professions. It is designed to give students a broad understanding of the scientific investigation of human health and disease.

The curriculum of the course benefits from the expertise of our staff, who are engaged in ground– breaking research into topics such as cancer and genetic disorders. The course is delivered with the support of leading scientists and clinical scientists within the BCAS campus. Collaborations with scientists in leading state universities and research laboratories in Sri Lanka allow us to draw on guest lecturers who add to the learning experience by providing insight into the immediate and professional applications of the subjects you are studying.

Members of the course team are themselves in the vanguard of research into molecular biology, DNA structure functions and drug delivery systems. We have formal links with some of the best hospitals, medical laboratories and research laboratories who can offer excellent work placement and career opportunities to our students. Furthermore, we have an agreement with General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University, which provides options for some of our undergraduate student research projects.

Aims of the programme The BSc top-up programme seeks to enable students to:

  • Build on existing knowledge through the development of graduate level bioscience skills, which will enable students to progress into a range of health-care related careers.
  • Develop the ability to think and argue in an integrated and logical manner, enabling the student to develop arguments based on theoretical and practical sources.
  • Apply knowledge from current research to enhance the development of critical, academic and professional skills.
  • Become independent learners and self-critical reflective thinkers with the desire to continue their personal and professional development.

Students on the BSc top-up degree in Biomedical Science will have the opportunity to develop subject specific knowledge, professional skills and personal qualities that will make them valuable employees within the healthcare industries. They will be able to undertake further training or engage with higher level (post-graduate) studies following graduation from the degree.
